A cross-sectional study design was employed, and a total of 55 adolescents were included using a total sampling technique. Smoking status was assessed using standardized questionnaires, while nutritional status was determined using anthropometric measurements, including body mass index (BMI). The study found that 76% of the adolescents were active smokers, with 69% of them being classified as undernourished. A significant relationship was observed between active smoking and poor nutritional status (p=0.018). The main contributing factors to poor nutritional status included an unbalanced diet, lack of access to nutritious food, and high smoking rates among adolescents. Smoking was found to reduce appetite and interfere with nutrient absorption, exacerbating nutritional deficiencies. The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive public health interventions, including health education, stricter regulation of cigarette sales to minors, and community support to create a smoke-free environment. Future research should include longitudinal studies to clarify the causal link between smoking and nutritional status, broaden demographic coverage, and incorporate qualitative methods to explore the social and cultural influences on adolescent smoking.</span></div> Moh Bahmid, Moh Bagus Qomaruddin , Zainal Fatah Copyright (c) 2024 Moh Bahmid, Moh Bagus Qomaruddin , Zainal Fatah https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/695 Wed, 09 Oct 2024 00:00:00 +0700 Analysis of the Relationship Between Fat Mass, Body Surface Area (BSA), and the Rate of Sports Injuries Among Students of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/702 <p style="font-weight: 400;">This study aimed to investigate the relationship between body fat mass, Body Surface Area (BSA), and incidence of sports injuries among physical education students at higher education institutions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, with the University of Zakho as the primary research site. This investigation addressed the increasing prevalence of sports-related injuries in university physical education programs within the distinct sociocultural and academic milieu of Kurdistan. Employing a descriptive analytical methodology, anthropometric data, sports injury information, and personal details were collected from third- and fourth-year students at the University of Zakho. The study utilized validated questionnaires, standardized physical assessments, and robust statistical analyses, including correlation and regression models. The findings revealed statistically significant associations between body composition parameters and injury rates, with notable variations across diverse sports disciplines and academic progressions. These results reflect specific athletic practices and educational paradigms prevalent in higher education institutions in the Kurdistan Region. The study concluded that body fat mass, BSA, and sport-specific variables are significant predictors of injury risk among physical education students in these institutions. These findings underscore the necessity for evidence-based and culturally appropriate injury prevention strategies tailored to the unique characteristics of sports programs in universities across the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Implementation of such strategies could potentially enhance student health outcomes and optimize performance in physical education curricula within the higher education system of the region.</p> Athraa Abdulelah Abdulsatar Copyright (c) 2024 Athraa Abdulelah Abdulsatar https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/702 Tue, 15 Oct 2024 00:00:00 +0700 Social and Emotional Determinants of COVID-19 Vaccination Attitudes among the Elderly at Health Center Manatuto, Timor-Leste https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/704 <div> <p class="14-ISCSAbstractRight"><span lang="EN-US">This study aimed to identify the key factors influencing COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among the elderly at Manatuto Villa Health Center, Kota </span><span lang="EN">Manatuto</span><span lang="EN-US">, Timor-Leste, with a focus on knowledge, social influence, personal experiences, emotional factors, and access to health information. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 278 respondents aged 60 years and above who completed the structured questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using univariate, bivariate, and logistic regression to identify the main determinants of vaccine acceptance. The results revealed that 72% of respondents lacked sufficient knowledge about the benefits of COVID-19 vaccination, which was attributed to low education levels and limited access to information (p &lt; 0.05). Additionally, 12% of the respondents reported negative experiences related to vaccine side effects, such as dizziness and nausea, which increased their hesitancy to receive subsequent doses. Social and family influences were also significant, with 71% of respondents following the advice of religious and community leaders in making vaccination decisions. Emotional factors, such as anxiety and fear of declining health due to old age, affected 67% of the respondents, becoming a barrier to vaccine acceptance. This study concludes that improving knowledge through community-based outreach programs, addressing anxiety, and involving trusted local leaders are essential strategies for enhancing vaccine acceptance among the elderly. The practical implications of these findings highlight the need for policies that focus on community education and outreach approaches to increase vaccination coverage in areas with limited access to healthcare.</span></p> </div> Aurita Dos Santos Chorry Santana, Anderias Umbu Roga, Pius Weraman Copyright (c) 2024 Aurita Dos Santos Chorry Santana, Anderias Umbu Ronga, Pius Weraman https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/704 Mon, 21 Oct 2024 00:00:00 +0700 Exploring Community Perspectives on Household Waste Management in Dili https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/706 <div><span lang="EN-US">This study explores the relationship between the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of the community in managing household waste in the Urban Village of Lahane Oriental, Dili. This study was motivated by the growing global and local challenges of waste management, particularly in urban areas where population growth exacerbates this issue. This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach, using questionnaires distributed to 96 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation to assess the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. The results showed that the majority of respondents (61.5%) had sufficient knowledge of waste management, while 62.5% demonstrated a positive attitude toward proper waste management. However, the community's waste management behavior did not fully meet the expected standards, despite generally positive attitudes and moderate knowledge. These findings indicate that, although knowledge and attitudes play an important role in influencing behavior, the lack of adequate infrastructure and institutional support remains a major obstacle to optimal waste management practices. It was concluded that further educational campaigns and improvements in waste management facilities are crucial for enhancing community engagement in sustainable waste management. The findings provide practical implications for local governments and policymakers in designing effective waste management interventions that consider both behavioral and structural factors.</span></div> Flora Martignonia De Carvalho Ximenes, Anderias Umbu Roga, Pius Weraman Copyright (c) 2024 Flora Martignonia De Carvalho Ximenes, Anderias Umbu Roga, Pius Weraman https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/706 Mon, 04 Nov 2024 00:00:00 +0700 Authoritative Parenting and Moral Development https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/715 <div><span lang="EN-US">This study investigated the influence of parenting styles on children's moral behavior in Pidoli Lombang Village, Panyabungan District, Mandailing Natal Regency, Indonesia. A quantitative approach using a survey method was employed, with a sample of 30 children aged 7 to 12 years selected through random sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to the children's parents or guardians, which assessed parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive) and children's moral behavior. Validity and reliability tests were conducted to ensure data quality. Prerequisite tests, including the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test and Levene's test for homogeneity of variances, were performed before the main analysis. Descriptive statistics revealed that authoritative parenting was the most predominantly practiced style in the village. A simple linear regression analysis showed a significant positive relationship between authoritative parenting and children's moral behavior, while authoritarian and permissive parenting styles exhibited negative relationships. The findings suggest that a balanced approach to parenting, combining discipline with emotional support, positively contributes to children's moral development. The study highlights the importance of implementing authoritative parenting in shaping positive moral behavior in children and provides valuable insights for parents, educators, and policymakers in fostering responsible ethical behavior in children within the context of rural Indonesian communities.</span></div> Salsa Nabila Lubis, Nashrillah Nashrillah Copyright (c) 2024 Salsa Nabila Lubis, Nashrillah https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/715 Mon, 23 Dec 2024 00:00:00 +0700 Religious Moderation in Indonesian Islamic Universities https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/713 <div><span lang="EN-US">This study investigates the implementation of religious moderation policies in IAIN Ponorogo, Indonesia, and their impact on fostering social cohesion and cultivating a moderate identity within the academic community. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, data were collected through comprehensive interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and document reviews. The findings revealed significant progress in integrating religious moderation values into the curriculum, research activities, and community service programs. The establishment of the Religious Moderation House (RMB) has been instrumental in reinforcing these values through seminars, workshops, and outreach. However, challenges persist in achieving a consistent understanding and application of moderation principles among academic stakeholders. The survey results indicate that while a majority of students, faculty, and staff report positive changes in attitudes after participating in moderation programs, some individuals still struggle to fully grasp and internalize these values. Psychological and cultural factors, along with varying levels of commitment across faculties, present additional barriers to comprehensive adoption of a moderate identity. Despite these challenges, this study highlights the positive impact of religious moderation initiatives on promoting tolerance, reducing social tension, and preparing students for engagement with broader societal diversity. The findings emphasize the need for enhanced coordination, practical incentives, and continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of these programmes. By embedding religious moderation into its core strategic plans, IAIN Ponorogo could continue to empower its academic community to embody these values, thereby contributing to a more inclusive and harmonious educational environment.</span></div> M Muhsin , Anjar Kususiyanah, Moh Maksum Copyright (c) 2024 M Muhsin , Anjar Kususiyanah, Moh Maksum https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/713 Wed, 23 Oct 2024 00:00:00 +0700 Islamic Ecotheology https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/705 <div><span lang="EN-US">The question addressed in this article is a possible new epistemological framework to find solutions to the current crisis. This Sufi approach is supplemented by an outlook on modern scientific epistemologies. As an important part of determining the beginning of Ramadan for the obligation to fast, Ibn Hajar al-Haytami was of the view that the results of ru'yah al-hilāl that utilized tools such as glass could not be accepted or used as guidelines for determining the beginning of the lunar month. This view contradicts the work of science that prioritizes and produces observation aids to maintain precision and reduce human error when observing celestial objects. With a historical and hermeneutic approach, this paper seeks to reveal the historical background of Ibn Hajar al-Haytami 's view regarding ru'yah al-hilāl. The findings of this paper are that Ibn Hajar al-Haytami's opinion is in line with and influenced by the decline of scientific civilization in Islam in the 10th century AH. At that time, especially in the Ottoman Turkish region, philosophy as the basis for the development of science was rejected and/or ignored in the scientific treasures of Islamic civilization.</p> Ahmad Munif, David Wildan, Siti Tatmainul Qulub Copyright (c) 2024 Ahmad Munif, David Wildan, Siti Tatmainul Qulub https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 https://journal.ascarya.or.id/index.php/iscs/article/view/710 Thu, 26 Dec 2024 00:00:00 +0700
